@Yooniverzal I guess it depends on where you live, in the U.S. it’s been a slow transition from 4:3 to 16:9. There’s still a bunch of channels (and people) over here who think that stretching standard def on a flatscreen is considered “HD”..

well, in holland, alot of hd broadcasting is already done in 21:9.
and since philips is a dutch company, i think it does make sense…

@Yooniverzal commercials, yes but the vast majority of HD broadcasts are done in the 16:9 ratio. It’s a good compromise. When DVD took off people were bitching about the black bars on 21:9 movies on their 4:3 tvs, a lot of wasted screen space. A 21:9 tv will waste a lot of space on movies that were not filmed in that native ratio.

What’s the point? Only 30% of movies are shot in 21:9, the rest is16:9. Imagine watching 4:3 on that set. Forget black bars on the sides, there will be black BOXES on the sides. I’ll have to admit that watching stretched SD content would look really goofy.

Firstly, I thought that the Blu-Ray released movies on 2:35:1 picture would ’suffered’ with top-and-botton black bars at convential 16:9 picture size as normal, but once he shows the demo of ‘Indiana Jones’ Blu-Ray with the 2:35:1 ( 21:9 ) pictures does not show any losses. Well, the other format such as 70mm movies ( 2:20 pic size ) would shows less black bars at far sides of the 21:9 LCD TV presentation. Nice demonstration.

the 21:9 tv i think is a stupid idea. if you watch more films than you do tv, you could make a whole home cinema with projector for much less than that tv.. and STILL have enough left to buy a regular 42″ tv as well! very much a novelty i imagine.
